Dr. German Mendez
German Mendez discovers a new coral reef system off the Florida coast while attending Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center in Port Everglades Florida Upon graduating from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (1986) as a Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine, he spent two years milking poisonous snakes in the Australian Outback providing antivenom material to Mexico's Department of Health. Returning home he became the first person to become a PADI Certified Course Instructor in Mexico. German then opened the first Eco-Diving Center on isla Cozumel. Watching firsthand the disregard for the environment while construction boomed within the Mayan Rivera, German became deeply concerned by what he observed. This concern motivated him to sell his dive center and move to Florida where he opened a Veterinarian Clinic. Then he put himself through Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center to become a Marine biologist. German did this so that with the addition of proper scientific training and experience he’d be better able to help lessen environmental impact in the marine environment upon returning to Mexico. MERC is pleased to have Dr. Mendez aboard as Science Coordinator and Field Director of all Latin American projects and educational programs. |
